1.M:Excuse me, have you got any books about the e-mail?
W: Yes, they are on that shelf over there.
Q: Where are the two speakers?
2.M: Oh, what’s your favourite sport, Mary?
W: Sorry, I don’t know, but I like music.
Q: What does Mary like?
3.M: Can I help you, madam?
W: Yes, sir. My daughter is lost.
Q: Who is the man maybe?
4.M: Lucy, where’s my little cat?
W: There’s no cat here, but there is a little sheep.
Q: What is the man doing now?
5. M: You are an early bird, Ann?
W: Thank you! I’ve come to office by bus instead.
Q: How did the woman come?
6.M: Oh, dear! It’s late. I must get to the railway station before seven.
W: Don’t worry, Tom. You can go there with my car.
Q: When must Tom get to the railway station?
7.W: Jim, who’s that woman?
M: You mean the one in the red coat? Oh, that’s my mother.
Q: Which person are the two speakers talking about?
8.M: There are twenty-five black bikes in our class. What about yours?
W: Only twelve. Others are red.
Q: How many black bikes are there in the woman speaker’s class?
9. W: Excuse me, how much are the tomatoes and potatoes?
M: Oh, two yuan fifty fen a kilo for the tomato and one yuan fifty fen a kilo for the potato. They are very cheap.
Q: How much are the potatoes?
10. W: Give me my raincoat , please.
M: OK, Mum . Oh, it’s raining.
Q: How about the weather that day?
M: What’s wrong with you?
W: I don’t feel well today.
M: Let me take your temperature. Oh, you’ve got a cold.
W: Is it serious?
M: No. Take this medicine three times a day , and you’ll be well soon. Don’t forget to drink more water.
M : Have you read today’s evening paper?
W: Not yet. What does it say?
M: It says a pupil was riding to school when a car hit him.
W: Oh, dear! Things like this often happen in busy streets. What did the drivers do with the boy?
M: He took him to the hospital as quickly as possible, and the boy was saved by the doctor at last.
W: Thank goodness.
W: Where does Jack work?
M: He works in the post office.
W: What does he do every day?
M: He goes to work by bus at 7:00 every morning. First he gets his newspapers and letters from the post office. Then he sends them to school.
W: Does he go there by bus, too?
M: No, he goes by bike. He looks so busy. But he can have a short rest after lunch at home.
W: Is he still busy in the afternoon?
M: Yes. He must take letters and newspapers to factories.
W: What are you doing, little Jim?
M: I’m looking at my pictures, Mum. I painted them in class.
W: Show me your pictures, please. Oh, what’s that, Jim?
M: It’s a house.
W: And what are these?
M: These are rooms. This room is the kitchen. That’s my bedroom.
W: What are those green lines?
M: They’re not lines., Mum. They’re trees. Those trees are in the blue sky.
W: Is this a plane?
M: It’s not a plane, Mum. It’s you. You’re in the sky, too.
W: What strange pictures!
A 50-year-old American officer came back to his school. The teachers asked him to give a talk to the small boys and girls there. The talk was about the love of the great country. All the children were sitting in a large meeting-room. The old officer went up and began speaking. He said, “ Boys and girls, I studied in the school when I was ten years old just like you. We were not as happy as you are today. Think about it and answer me why you are so happy now.”
No sound came from the children. The old man waited for a long time. Then a boy in the front put up his small hand. “ Good boy! Please answer me., dear, “ said the officer.
With a big smile on his face, the boy stood up and said,” If you speak long enough, we won’t have math and science lessons this morning.”
One should first do more speaking in learning a foreign language. It is the groundwork of reading and writing. You’d better try your best to speak. Don’t be afraid of making mistakes. While you are doing this, a good exercise is ti write—keep a diary, write letters and so on. Many mistakes in your speaking will be easily found when you write. Through correcting the mistakes, you can do better in learning a language.
If you are slow in speaking, don’t worry. One of the helpful ways is by reading. The important thing is to choose something interesting to read. It mustn’t be too difficult for you. When you are reading in this way, don’t stop to look up the words if you can guess their meanings or if they are not important to the sentence.
