Tourism wasn’t as important as it is today. In the past, only people with a good deal of money could travel on holidays to other countries. More people travel today than in the past because there is a growing middle class in many parts of the world; that is to say, people now have more money for travel. Special plane fares(费用) for tourists make travel less expensive and more attractive than ever before. One person doesn’t travel for the same reason as another. But most people enjoy seeing countries that are different from their own. They also like to meet new people and to taste new food.
Tourism causes many changes in a country and in people’s lives. People build new hotels and restaurants and train native men and women as guides to show visitors interesting places. There’re new nightclubs and other amusements. International tourism is clearly a big business.

Did you know that a turtle(乌龟)can lay 12 eggs in one minute? A large sea turtle lays
around
150 eggs at a time. She lays all these eggs in just a few minutes.
Large sea turtles live in the warm seas of the world. Except for when they lay
their eggs, they
spend their whole lives in the water. When it is time to lay their eggs, the females swim to land.
They usually return to the place where they themselves were born. How they find their way back
there is
unknown.
When they reach shore, the big, heavy turtles crawl slowly up to the high water
mark. Using
their flippers, they pull themselves along the sand. They must struggle like mountain climbers.
When
they finally reach dry sand, they rest before beginning the difficult task of
laying eggs.
The turtles lay the eggs in deep holes and cover them with warm sand. The sand
protects the
eggs from harm. Then the females leave them. After a few weeks, if you happened to be walking
along the beach, you might see the sand begin to shake. You may see tiny black balls coming out
of the sand. The tiny heads of baby turtles!

Having returned from her round trip, the angry woman stood outside the ticket office of the station. “The railway owes me £12,” she said to Harry Jenks, the young man working at the office . “You sold me a ticket for May 22nd, but there was no ship from Jersey that night. So my daughter and I had to stay in a hotel. It cost me £12.”
Harry was worried. He remembered selling the woman a return ticket. “Come into the office, Madam,” he said politely. “I’ll just check the Jersey timetable for May 22nd.”
The woman and her little girl followed him inside. She was quite right, as Harry soon discovered. There was no sailing on May 22nd. How could he have made such a careless mistake? He shouldn’t have sold her a ticket for that day. Wondering what to do, he smiled at the child. “You look sun burnt,” he said to her. “Did you have a nice holiday in Jersey?”
“Yes,” she answered, shyly. “The beach was lovely. And I can swim too!”
“That’s fine,” said Harry. “My little girl can’t swim a bit yet .Of course, she’s only three…”
“I’m four,” the child said proudly. “I’ll be four and a half.”
Harry turned to the mother. “I remember your ticket, Madam,” he said. “But you didn’t get one for your daughter, did you?”
“Er, well—” the woman looked at the child. “I mean… she hasn’t started school yet. She’s only four.”
“A four-year-old child must have a ticket, Madam. A child’s return ticket to Jersey costs …let me see…£13.50. So if the railway pays your hotel, you will owe £1.50. The law is the law, but since the fault was mine…”

How often one hears children wishing they were grown-ups and old people wishing they were young again. Each age has its pleasures and its pains, and the happiest person is the one who enjoys what each age gives him without wasting his time in useless regrets.
Childhood is a time when there are few responsibilities to make life difficult. If a child has good parents, he is fed, looked after and loved, whatever he may do. It is impossible that he will ever again in his life be given so much without having to do anything in return. In addition, life is always presenting new things to the child — things that have lost their interest for older people because they are too well-known. But a child has his parents. He is not so free to do what he wishes to do; he is continually being told not to do things or being punished for what he has done wrong.
When the young man starts to earn his own living, he can no longer expect others to pay for his food, his clothes, and his room, but has to work if he wants to live comfortably. If he spends most of his time playing about in the way that he used to as a child, he will go hungry. And if he breaks the laws of society as he used to break the laws of his parents, he may go to prison. If, however, he works hard, keeps out of trouble and has good health, he can have the great happiness of building up for himself his own position in society.
71. According to the second paragraph, the writer thinks that __.
A. life for a child is comparatively easy
B. a child is always loved whatever he does
C. if much is given to a child, he must do something in return
D. only children are interested in life

D. should be able to take care of himself

A. People are often satisfied with their life.
B. Life is less interesting for old people.
C. Adults are free to do what they want to do.
D. Adults should no longer rely on others.

A repot on setting off fireworks in the Spring Festival
Recently students in our class have made a survey on people’s attitude towards setting off fireworks in the Spring Festival.
In the survey, 40% of them think that setting off fireworks causes air and noise pollution, and what’s worse, it sometimes causes terrible accidents to us and to our property. But 60% of the people believe that setting off fireworks certainly adds pleasure and joy to the festival. Therefore, it is a wonderful tradition.
From the survey, we can see that most people are for setting off fireworks in the Spring Festival. So I suggest that a certain area should be chosen for setting off fireworks.

W: Certainly, but I warn you. It’s not as good as they say.
M: What’s the matter with it?
W: Well, for one thing, the story is poorly constructed. And the characters in the story are more like paper dolls than living people.
M: That’s strange. Usually that writer does a good job. I’ve read four of his books and thought they were all well done.
W: I’ve enjoyed reading his books, but he failed this time.
M: What did the review say?
W: They were mixed---- some good, some bad. My view, bad.

W: Hello, Ben. You’re getting ready for tomorrow’s lessons, aren’t you?
M: Yes, but I’m a bit nervous. I have no idea what’ll happen in class and how I’ll get along with my classmates.
W: I understand how you’re feeling. Just take it easy. You’ll make a lot of friends very soon.
M: Thank you. I’ll try my best to get used to my new school life as soon as possible. By the way, what time does the first class begin?
W: At 8 o’clock. But before that we have 10 minutes to hand in homework and then 20 minutes for morning reading.
M: So we must get to school before 7:30, right?
W: Right.
M: How long does each class last?
W: 45 minutes, I think, with a 10 or 15 minutes’ break.
M: Well, I hear that lunchtime is nearly 12 o’clock and I will be starving by then.
W; Don’t worry. During the break after the second class, we can buy something to eat.
M: That’s good.

M: Hey, Ellen, How are you?
W: I’m fine, Bob. Aren’t you glad it’s a holiday again?
M: Yes, are you going to the concert this Friday night?
W: I haven’t thought much about it , are you ?
M: Sure, would you like to go with me?
W: Sounds like fun!
M: You have to buy your own ticket, though.
W: Are you short of money again? Shall I buy your ticket?
M: Wow, where did you come into so much money?
W: You know I work as a waitress at the student centre. Anyway, now that final exams are over, I’d love a night out. If you like, let’s buy the tickets now.
M: OK, let’s go.

M: Shall we watch TV for a while?
W: I don’t like American TV. People keep hitting each other and shooting each other.
M: Some of the shows are pretty violent. Is the life here full of violence?
W: I don’t believe it. The people I’ve met here are very kind.
M: So are the people I know. But look at the newspapers. There’s a lot of violence in very newspaper. Most of the news seems to be about crime.
W: Maybe nice people aren’t interesting enough.
M: You’re probably right. People won’t buy newspapers unless there’s exciting news in them.
W: Is that why there is so much violence on TV? Won’t people watch a show unless violent things happen?
M: I don’t know. A lot of people like shows about the Old West, with cowboys and Indians attacking each other. I don’t like them myself.
W: Neither do I.
M: They don’t show how people really lived in the Old West.
W: Of course not.

There is a strange area in the Atlantic Ocean called the Bermuda Triangle (百慕大三角洲). People have been mad about it for years because of the mysterious disappearance of many ships and planes in the area. There is hardly any agreement about the cause of these disappearances. In fact, it is difficult to find any agreement about how far away it spreads. Yet most people say that the triangle’s furthest northern point is Bermuda, its furthest western point is up to Florida, and its eastern point may stretch out as far as the coast of Africa. A few researchers prefer the northern point to be in the Boston area.
